Donny
smoothed his hands over his jeans for the thousandth time. The lecture was
almost over. He’d have to go out soon. He’d have to join the team. Nothing more
than the friends!
He
could not believe that he was late for the celebration with his friends in the
newly opened pub. It was hard for him to understand that even withdrawing money
from M-pesa is a little bit longer. Though he knew the process very well, felt
that it was delaying him from joining the already settled friends. How could he
miss yet he was the day’s boss?
He
could be the first to enjoy a hard drink, he supposed. It was a sad thing for
him to be late, but nothing worth coming over there on the very first day of
its operations. The young man was rich of his father’s wealth. It was a natural
arrangement, of course but not one without its inconveniences.
“You
are late, Donny.” He checked his reflection in a corner of the window and
decided to do away with the sunglasses. “Damped lecture”
They
did pretty well. They drunk, ate and drunk. None of his friends would ever ask
when they would leave the place, because they were too ‘smart’ and too ‘caring’
to ask obvious questions- they knew it was on a Friday and of course would
spent the whole night drinking, dancing and merrymaking. But the understanding would
be there, staring Donny in the face every time he requests for another bottle.
“You
are our Hero Donny.”
Donny
realized that everything he had in his pocket had varnished. Little did he know
about the whereabouts of his wallet, nor his school and national id, either? As
tragic as it were, Donny had to accept the fact that he had been blackmailed in
a way he could not understand. He had to let it go. With tears flowing stared
at the sky, perhaps expecting something but the reality remained the same.
Into
the silent and boring room, his cheeks still stung from the saddest moment. His
tears made it worse. He felt like a gigantic idiot. The friends that remained
this far were his belonging which could not help at that time, all looked
valueless in front of his dumpy eyes.
His
girlfriend entered without making prior notice. Three more steps. Two more.
One. Still no arms. No smile, either. Only a quick admonition before she said
softly: “Your cheeks are red”
I
have nothing left by my side Sandra. You are the only person I trust as for now.
My friends turned their backs against me. But I thank God; they spared my life
for you.
As
if it was not enough, tears rolled down his cheeks.
Imposing bans on unwanted friendships is unlikely to help one in life and may distance you from your dreams, engaging with ‘bad' friends may turn things around living one in helpless situation. choose friends wisely.
ReplyDeleteThanks buddy. With careful choosing of friends, everything is gona be alright.
Deleteyou are reminding me of the book called "AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE" where DR.Stockman comes back and tells her wife that he's made a discovery and that discovery was "THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD IS HE WHO STANDS ALONE" indeed friends are enemies my dear.
ReplyDeleteat some point the enemy really is the devil who lures peoples mind and make them enemies
ReplyDeleteLet us be careful in whatever we do with our so-called friends so as to be safer
